Auto Rollover Crashes
The rollover is recognized as one of the most violent and dangerous types of crashes for any vehicle. Car manufacturers almost always try to blame driver error as the cause of this type of crash. The truth is some vehicles are much more prone to rollover than others. The tendency of a vehicle to roll over depends on many factors such as the center of gravity, height and the width and length of the wheel base.
We know that generally, SUV’s are involved in a disproportionately high number of roll over crashes compared to other vehicles. Car manufacturers have been slow to recognize this fact and address the problem. SUV manufacturers desire to capture market share has driven them to market vehicles that they know will rollover at unacceptably high rates. They have been slow to implement solutions such as electronic stability control systems that have been shown to reduce the number of accidents involving SUVs as much as 67%. Car manufactures have also settled for making vehicles that only meet minimum government standards for seat belts and roof crush. This results in SUVs that do not adequately protect the occupants in a rollover crash.
The car industry is aware of technology such as pre-tensioning devices on seat belts that keep occupants securely within the survivable occupant space in a rollover. However, they refuse to use that technology.
